The purpose of Invisalign is to move a patient’s natural teeth into better alignment. Using Invisalign, you can:

  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Straighten and prefect crowded and crooked teeth
  • Improve bite problems—crossbite, underbite, and overbite
  • Widen your smile’s profile

As you probably already know, traditional braces move teeth using metal brackets and wires. Your dentist will bond metal brackets to your teeth, and then connect these brackets with wires. These wires apply enough pressure and torque to move teeth over time.

Invisalign, on the other hand, moves teeth with clear plastic aligners. These custom-fit, clear plastic aligners fit snugly over the patient’s teeth. Throughout the treatment process, the patient wears a series of Invisalign aligner; each aligner improves upon the results of the previous aligner, incrementally moving the patient’s teeth into alignment.

Because Invisalign aligners are not bonded in place, the patient is able to take them out in order to eat and drink (anything other than water) as well as to clean his or her smile. As you would imagine, the flexibility that Invisalign provides ensures that patients are able to fit orthodontic treatment into their regular routines.

The average timeline for Invisalign treatment is 18 months. Your unique timeline may be shorter or longer depending on the current state of your smile as well as your dental goals. When we meet, our dentist can assess your smile, and give you a better idea of your treatment timeline.
