Glendale Dentist Explains How CEREC Restorations Speed Up the Dental Crowns Process

Written by Dr. McKay on Jul 28, 2014

Like many aspects of dentistry, dental crown technology has come a long way over the years. Dental technology now allows us to place crowns in an easy, comfortable, and convenient way! Our Glendale dentists use CEREC crowns to help you get the healthy, beautiful smile you need in a short amount of time.

What are crowns?

Dental crowns are placed on your teeth after you have a cavity treated. They can also be used to restore the functionality of damaged teeth, or to give you a more even biting surface. Crowns completely cover the visible tooth surface once they are placed—they are usually made of porcelain.

What is CEREC technology?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Essentially, this technology allows us to craft your dental crowns right here in our office. Most patients can have their crowns placed in only one appointment—so you don’t have to wait for your restoration to be milled in a different facility.

With traditional crowns, patients had to schedule two or three appointments to have a crown placed. In between your first appointment, when your natural tooth was prepared for crown placement, and your final appointment when your permanent crown is attached, you would have to live with a temporary crown. These temporary crowns are often ill fitting and uncomfortable.

Now with CEREC crowns, you don’t have to worry about that. Your tooth will be prepared, and we’ll make an impression of your tooth for the crown. Then your CEREC crown will be milled in-office by a computer-guided porcelain shaper. In just one appointment your final CEREC can be placed. This allows you to get the treatment you need and get out of the dentist’s office!

We’re proud to bring CEREC technology to our patients in our Glendale dental office. Please give us a call to learn more about how this process works or to schedule your own consultation!
