Glendale Dentist Explains How Every Patient Can Maximize At-Home Oral Hygiene

Written by Dr. McKay on Aug 4, 2014

Our Glendale dentist office wants to make sure that all of our patients are brushing their teeth at least twice a day. However, beyond this, we are here to empower our patients to maximize their oral hygiene efforts. Ready to learn more about how to take your brushing habits to the next level? If so, keep reading…

Let’s start off by reviewing when you should be brushing your teeth. Clean your teeth in the morning when you start your day, and before bed, in order to give your smile a clean slate before bed.

Be mindful of what kinds of oral hygiene tools you are using to brush your teeth. Toothbrushes with firm bristles are often too abrasive for dental enamel and gum tissues. These bristles may actually lead to enamel demineralization and gum tissue recession.

If the toothbrush that you are using is too large, this will hamper the efficiency of your cleaning routine. The head of your toothbrush should be small enough to comfortably fit into the back of your mouth—this is the only way that you can clear plaque from those teeth in the rear of your mouth.

Patients with arthritis, or other agility problems, may benefit from toothbrushes that are retrofitted with easy-to-maneuver handles. Electric toothbrushes are also often beneficial for patients who have trouble cleaning their own teeth. Your dentist will help you determine whether any of these personalized tools are right for you.
