As more and more research emerges showing that gum health is crucial to a patient’s oral health as well as overall wellbeing, patients of all ages are asking “what can I do to keep my gum tissue healthy and strong?”
To help you answer that question, our Glendale dentist has written this short explanation of you can do to maximize your dental hygiene efforts at home. Thorough daily dental care will make a world of difference to your smile.
So what are the goals we are trying to accomplish when we clean our gum tissue? First of all, we want to clear away the bacteria that have built up on our teeth and gums during the day. We also want to take the opportunity to examine our gum tissue, and to make note of any changes in the way our gums feel or look.
To thoroughly clean your gums, make sure to…
· Floss at least once a day
· Brush at least twice a day (you can brush after every meal if you are having trouble keeping your mouth looking and feeling clean)
· Use a toothbrush that doesn’t inadvertently damage your gum tissue (stiff bristled brushes can actually do more harm than good)
· Add an antimicrobial mouthwash if you need added freshness
When you clean your gums, keep your eye out for any of these signs of gum disease
· Red gum tissue
· Swollen gum tissue
· Tissue that bleeds easily
· Signs that your gum tissue is pulling away from your teeth and jawbone
If you do notice these problems, let your dentist know pronto. Your dentist will be able to help you craft a dental hygiene plane that restores your oral health.
