Establish a good routine

As you get back into the swing of things, you’ll naturally fall into a “getting ready for school routine.” This is an excellent time to prioritize your child’s morning oral health routine. Make sure that he or she is brushing gently for at least two minutes every morning before heading out the door.

Pack smart snacks

If you pack a lunch or snack for kids, take this opportunity to reinforce smile-healthy eating habits. Remember, crunchy veggies—like carrots and celery promote saliva production, and physically scrape plaque off of the dental enamel. Foods that are high in vitamin C can also help to promote optimal oral health.

Plan ahead for inconveniences

You may want to send your child to school with some floss handy. When food particles inevitably become stuck between his or her teeth, it is much better to remove them using gentle floss, rather than more abrasive toothpicks.

Help your child stay hydrated!

One of the most important things that your child can do in order to maintain a healthy smile is to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Check your child’s classroom policies—are they allowed to bring a water bottle with them? Consuming water allows your body to produce health-boosting saliva, and it minimizes bad breath.
