Glendale Family Dentist Shares Advice About At-Home Oral Hygiene

Written by Dr. McKay on Sep 28, 2015

Every day you have the chance to help your smile by implementing a thorough oral hygiene routine. Our Glendale dentists help every one of our patients maximize their oral hygiene efforts. Today we will be discussing a few of the important basics of caring for your smile at home.

In the morning

There are a few things that you can do in the morning in order to boost your oral health. First of all, you should be brushing your teeth every morning in order to clear away plaque that has accumulated in the night. You can also rinse with a mouthwash if your dentist recommends it.

Also, take the time to drink a large glass or two of water. This is great for your overall health, and it helps your body produce plenty of saliva during the day. Saliva is essential for neutralizing oral bacteria and eliminating dental debris.

Midday and throughout the day

As you eat and drink during the day, plaque will continue to accumulate in your mouth. So make sure to drink enough water, and rinse your mouth with water after meals. Some patients with existing dental problems may need to brush or rinse with a mouthwash midday—your dentist can give you more information about whether this is appropriate for you.

At night

Before you go to bed is the time for you to floss between your teeth and along your gum-line. Floss your teeth before your brush, so that any dental debris that you have dislodged will be brushed away. And, again, you can finish your routine with a mouth rinse, if necessary.
