Glendale Root Canal Dentist Walks You Through The Steps Of Root Canal Therapy

Written by Dr. McKay on Dec 13, 2022

If your dentist has told you that you need to undergo root canal therapy, you may not completely know what that entails. That is why our Glendale root canal dentists are here to give you some details about how this treatment progresses.

Let’s get started!

The purpose of root canal therapy is to clear away the inner dental pulp, nerves, and roots of a damaged tooth.

In order to prep your smile for treatment our team will:

  • Take an X-ray of your damaged tooth to pinpoint the location and extent of the damage
  • Clean your smile
  • Surround the affected tooth with rubber sheeting, to prevent the treatment area from getting wet as we work

Once the prep is complete, it is time to start repairing your tooth.

  • We will drill what is called “access hole” in your dental enamel and dentin—this hole allows us to reach the inner layers of your tooth
  • Next, we will start lowering dental files into your tooth through the access hole. As we move the dental files in and out, they pull the inner tooth material up out of the tooth
  • Once we have cleared out the tooth we will sterilize and treat any remaining infections
  • We then fill the tooth with a rubber compound called gutta percha
  • To finish the treatment process, we restore the tooth with a dental filling or a crown, depending on the extent of restoration needed

Once the root canal therapy process is complete, your previously damaged tooth will be stabilized, and healthy. Root canal therapy allows you to save a severely damaged tooth, and it significantly minimizes the risk of the infection spreading to other teeth and oral tissues.
