Written by Dr. McKay on Jul 30, 2013

Do you have problematic wisdom teeth? If so, you will probably benefit from wisdom tooth extraction. Our Glendale dentist office has helped many patients get the wisdom tooth treatment that they need. Today we are providing answers to many common patient questions about how wisdom tooth treatment works. So check out these questions and answers to get the information you need.

Q: What are wisdom teeth?

A: Wisdom teeth are teeth that sit behind your back teeth on the top and bottom of your mouth. It is thought that these teeth were once necessary for humans, but have since become superfluous through evolution. Most patients today do not have room in their mouths for their wisdom teeth to fully emerge. This can lead to a number of structural dental problems.

Q: How many wisdom teeth do I have?

A: Many patients have four wisdom teeth—two on the top jaw line and two on the bottom. However, not all patients develop four wisdom teeth. Our dentist will be able to tell you how many wisdom teeth you have after examining your X-rays.

Q: What happens during wisdom tooth extraction?

A: During treatment our dentist will simply remove your wisdom teeth. The way that we remove your teeth will depend on whether your wisdom teeth have erupted or not. If your wisdom teeth have emerged, we may be able to pull them as we would pull a standard tooth. If your wisdom teeth are stuck in your jawbone—this is quite common—we will extract them surgically.
