Warm Weather Dental Tips From Our Glendale Dentist

Written by Dr. McKay on Apr 5, 2016

Have you ever considered how our warm weather routines may affect or smiles? We certainly have!

It may not be immediately apparent, but as our routines change in the summer, we put our smiles at risk. So today our Glendale dentists are going to be talking about some things you should keep in mind as you enjoy these coming months.

Water, water, water

You probably already know that you need to drink plenty of water in the summer to avoid potentially serious health issues like heatstroke. But did you know that also need to stay hydrated to help your smile?

When you are dehydrated, your body is unable to produce saliva efficiently. Saliva helps to neutralize bacteria and acids in your mouth—thus remineralizing enamel, and minimizing your risk of suffering from cavities. So drink water liberally and regularly.

Sweet treats

Warm weather also makes us more likely to indulge in certain sweet treats that can impact our smiles. Refreshing ice cream, popsicles, lemonade, soft drinks, and juices can all contribute to cavity development. If you are following tip #1 (water, water, water) you are already taking great steps toward protecting your smile! You can also rinse your mouth with water after consuming these substances to prevent sugars from sitting on your enamel for a long period of time.

Increased activity

Once it gets warm outside, many people—especially kids—start to play sports regularly. Before you or your child begin sports or strenuous outdoor activities, take a moment to research whether it is recommended that participants wear mouth guards to protect their smiles. Our dental team strongly encourages you to get outfitted with a custom mouth guard if you will be engaging in contact sports/activities!

Take care of your smile this summer by following these simple tips and guidelines. And remember, you can always contact our Glendale dentists for further information and recommendations. Enjoy the sunshine!
