Sometimes, the smallest changes can make the biggest difference; this is absolutely true when it comes to your smile. By optimizing your daily oral hygiene routine, you can help to keep plaque and tartar at bay, thus improving your long-term oral health. Keep reading to get some tips from our Glendale dentists!

As you may already know, the primary goal of at-home dental care is to limit the amount of plaque and calcified plaque, called tartar, that is able to accumulate in your smile. Plaque and tartar contain bacteria; bacteria weaken enamel and oral tissues, leading to cavities and gum disease.

Because plaque is continually developing—every day and night—it is crucial that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss once a day. Here are some key things to keep in mind:

  • The best times to brush are in the morning when you wake up, and at night before you go to sleep
  • The best time to floss is at night
  • Your goal should be to brush your smile for at least two minutes every time that you brush—many people are surprised by just how long two minutes is!
  • Use gentle pressure when brushing, as a firm hand can actually lead to inadvertent gum tissue damage and enamel erosion
  • Most patients will do well with soft-bristled brushes; these toothbrushes are effective without being overly abrasive

Another easy upgrade to make is to switch out your oral hygiene tools. Swap your toothbrush for a new one every three months, and after you’ve been ill.  Make sure that the floss that you’re using is the appropriate width; it needs to fit comfortably between all of your teeth, all the way down into your gumline.

We all get complacent with our oral hygiene routines sometimes, so, now is the time to evaluate your dental routine with a critical eye—what can you improve? As always, our Glendale dentists are here to help you in any way possible—give us a call to get started!
