Oral Cancer Screenings From Our Glendale Dentists Help You Stay Healthy

by Dr. Mckay

Oral cancers can develop in any of your oral tissues. Because they often, in their earliest stages, develop asymptomatically, it is crucial that you stay on track with your professional dental appointments, because our Glendale dentists complete oral cancer screenings during cleanings and assessments.

How often do we do oral cancer screenings?

The American Dental Association recommends that patients complete professional cleanings every six months or so. Some patients are at an increased risk of developing oral cancer, and they may need to see their dentists more frequently. Smoking/tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and some trains of HPV can all put you at risk of developing cancerous tissues.

What happens during a screening?

During a normal assessment, our team will visually examine your tissues for signs of swelling, discoloration, and texture changes. We may also probe cheek, gum, or tongue tissue to find anomalous tissues or tumors. If necessary, we will recommend more advanced screenings with cancer-detecting-dyes and digital imaging.

What happens if something is irregular?

If oral cancer is suspected, our team may take a sample or biopsy in order to test it. Then based on all of the information that we have gathered we will recommend a treatment protocol. This may include a removing cancerous tissues, utilizing radiation, and/or going through chemotherapy. Every case is different, and your treatment plan will be tailored to suit your specific situation.

One of the best things that you can do to empower early oral cancer detection is to keep up with your regular routine of professional cleanings and assessments. When your dentist sees you regularly, he or she is able to notice even small changes in your oral tissues.
